Professor David Aanensen

Professor David Aanensen is a COG-UK Principal Investigator for the University of Oxford and is Director of the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance (CGPS), at the Big Data Institute, University of Oxford and the Wellcome Genome Campus. David and his team focus on data flow and the use of genome sequencing for surveillance of microbial pathogens through a combination of web application, software engineering, methods development, large-scale structured pathogen surveys and sequencing of microbes with delivery of information for decision-making. Professor Aanensen is also Director of the NIHR funded Global Health Research Unit on Genomic Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), working with partners leading national AMR strategies in The Phillipines, Colombia, Nigeria and India to implement genomic surveillance and linking to routine phenotypic and epidemiological data for priority pathogens. Within COG-UK, the CGPS team have focussed on the production of metadata gathering tools for easy data deposition to CLIMB across the consortia, web tool to enable rapid online lineage assignment via Pangolin and tailoring the data linkage and visualisation tool Microreact to deliver visual outputs from the COG Consortium used to rapidly visualise lineage distribution and spread in a geographic and temporal context.
