Dr David Simpson is a COG-UK Principal Investigator for Queen’s University Belfast and a Reader in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast. His research applies molecular biology and bioinformatics to study vision and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of his research is to provide a better understanding of the causes of eye and vascular diseases. This is achieved by application of advanced molecular biology approaches to provide novel insights, enabling both development of new treatments and design of improved diagnostic and prognostic tests. He is Academic lead of the Queen’s Genomics Core Technology Unit and has applied his experience with nanopore sequencing to support rapid turnaround of SARS-CoV-2 sequences within the Belfast COG-UK hub. He is also applying a miniaturised library preparation protocol to facilitate high throughput SARS-CoV-2 sequencing on the Illumina platform.
