Dr Chris Illingworth is based at the MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge. After a PhD and postdoctoral work in computational chemistry Chris moved into the field of population genetics, pioneering methods for the interpretation of genome sequence data collected from rapidly evolving systems. His recent work has focused upon the within-host evolution and transmission of viruses causing acute respiratory infection, with an interest in evolution within immunocompromised hosts. As part of COG-UK he has developed methods for the rapid identification and analysis of SARS-CoV-2 transmission events within hospitals, with the aim of tracking and preventing hospital-based transmission.
